Great Drinking Songs

Sometimes a strong beer like an imperial stout or barleywine is best enjoyed in solitude, letting yourself get simultaneously lost in the beer and your thoughts. I usually like to aid this process with a little music. Here are some of my favorite songs for such occasions. Feel free to leave yours in the comments.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band
Romance in Durango - Bob Dylan
My My Hey Hey - Neil Young
Fake Empire - The National
Aquemini - Outkast
Caravan - Van Morrison
Don't Think Twice (It's Alright) - Waylon Jennings
Sins of My Father - Tom Waits
Let it Loose - Rolling Stones
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Kris Kristofferson

in my experience, songs make great drinking songs when at least the better part of an entire verse contains nothing more than "sha na na/la la la/nah nah nah" or mentions/references drinking of some intoxicating beverages.

Following these rules you can't go wrong: as referenced by your choice of the band's the night they drove old dixie down, VM's Caravan, and KK's Sunday Morning Coming Down.

Others not mentioned:

VM's Glad Tidings does the trick.
More recent ones include the Felice Brothers "Frankie's Gun" and "Whiskey in my Whiskey."

Paul Simon's The boxer; Tangled up in blue also fit the bill.

Probably one of the better options:

Muddy Waters Champagne & Reefer: "give me champagne when I'm thirsty. . .give me reefer when I want to get high."

If only life were that simple.

Trivia:
anybody think of a song that accomplishes both? 1) references to drinking, and 2) a sing along shana/lalal/nana portion?

To Jeremey - who can forget the great Gary Hempsey http://www.garyhempseykeywest.com/

To AK - couldn't agree more with your additions. Tough trivia question, I'll have to think about that one.

A personal fave I left off the list in order to not have too much Dylan would by Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

Trivia Answer: the obligatory...Piano Man.
(I am sure there are others)

AK - How about American Pie? You have the reference to, "Whiskey and Rye" and the "bye, bye miss american pie..." is certainly a sing-a-long.

Jesse, man, have you ever listened to the Hold Steady? One of the best bar bands around. It's hard to get into them if you haven't seen them live, but seriously great drinking songs. To name a few:

Citrus
Party Pit
Constructive Summer (makes me wished I liked Double Whiskys with no ice)
Massive Nights
