Kelso
With Sixpoint, Brooklyn and Chelsea all supplying NYC with great beer, it is easy to forget about Kelso. I'll do a longer post on their beers and the brewery soon. I just had their St. Gowanus the other day at Franny's. It was full of flavor and a little Belgian spice but just under 6% ABV, a perfect session beer. Certainly a brewery that deserves a little more attention than it currently gets.

i find myself ordering Kelso whenever available as a way to root for the home team, but to be completely honest, I am never 100% satisfied. It's almost as if something's always off. I don't have the world's most refined palate, but something is never quite right in the beer's balance. Same goes for Heartland brewery beers. They are all brewed out of the same facility, i wonder if that has something to do with it.
I remember enjoying the recessionator (Bock) served at Ignazio's in Dumbo with a better than average pizza pie with carmalized onions, mushrooms and olives, but i credit that experience more to the high alcohol content (8.5%), and me wanting to get drunk and eat pizza in dumbo, and less to the craft of the brew.
I agree with you in the sense that I'm never 100% satisfied or wowed but I'm never disappointed.
I certainly need to try more of their stuff before I really weigh in on the brewery.
Interesting that my enjoyable Kelso experience was also with a pizza. Sometimes it's nice to have a beer that takes a back seat but still has enough flavor to not be totally lost in the meal...
